When the Unexpected Happens

Many times, divorce occurs when we do not want it or ask for it, and it blind-sides us.  Divorce can be very PAINFUL.  It can hurt and may cause feelings of rejection. As much as we want to, we cannot control the other party or their actions.

Stephanie went through her own divorce in 2004 and knows how divorce can impact family, friends, church communities, and those we love the most. At The Financial Knot ®, we desire to be part of the healing process for couples and their families when divorce occurs. Our clients many times are devastated that their marriage is ending, sometimes after years of therapy.  We are in the business of bringing peace and creativity to the process of divorce.

What happens in traditional divorce? Attorneys often do not help parties understand how the decisions they are making in their divorce will impact their financial future. This is not their role in divorce; they are there to help you with your legal transaction with your spouse, then are gone. Their role then is more transactional in nature.

As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst ® professional, Stephanie can provide illustrations showing the financial impacts to help clients and their attorney understand:

  • the future outcomes of a marital settlement on the parties involved

  • what assets are best for the client to retain in the settlement

  • consider alternate solutions

Clients say this leaves them feeling EMPOWERED because they have knowledge of their finances now, after divorce and years into the future which allows the parties to make more informed decisions.

Many times, one party needs some additional support in a traditional divorce and will hire us individually to be their advocate for the financial aspects in the divorce. Other times, a couple needs a neutral party to guide them jointly in separating their finances in a more collaborative setting. In both instances, The Financial Knot ® offers services to help with the financial side of divorce and empower clients with a realistic plan for their future.

If divorce has hit unexpectedly, it can be a shock. “Fight or Flight” can kick in causing you to make rash decisions that could cost you thousands of dollars! Hiring professionals EARLY in the process can help you get your arms around the unexpected and possibly reduce your costs.

Financial planning is for many life events such as graduation, having a baby, death of a spouse and/or retirement. Consider using it for the unexpected event of divorce because most of divorce is financial! Why not have a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst ® professional on your team?

The Financial Knot® is another business name for Independent Advisor Alliance, LLC. All financial planning advice is offered through Independent Advisor Alliance, LLC, a registered investment advisor.
